PIKES PEAK REGION

Welcome to Cripple Creek, a historic gambling and mining town that’s one of the most dynamic and scenic tourism destinations in Colorado. The grandly restored Old West brick buildings along Bennett Avenue, surrounded by majestic mountains, boast nine unique state-of-the-art casinos, as well as great restaurants, shops and hotels. The excitement that drove the Greatest Gold Rush Ever still lives in Cripple Creek, where treasure seekers and hooligans from near and far try their hands at poker, black jack, roulette, craps and slot machines with the highest casino paybacks in Colorado*. Cripple Creek’s biggest gold rush started on Oct. 20, 1890, when local cowboy Bob Womack discovered a rich vein of gold in Poverty Gulch, just north of town. Prospectors by the thousands followed, picks in hand, their fortunes waiting to be unearthed. Wagon trains stretched along the plains, their slogan: “Pikes Peak or Bust.” By 1910, more than $18 million worth of gold had been mined, and Cripple Creek and its sister city, Victor, had become thriving centers of commerce, culture and debauchery, with more than 55,000 residents and 150 saloons and casinos. Gold continues to flow out of the area. The Cripple Creek and Victor Gold Mining Company mines more than 200,000 ounces of gold annually, making it one of the top-producing gold mines in the world. Gambling returned to Cripple Creek in 1991. Legalized gaming filled empty store fronts with thriving casinos, some the size of old saloons, 1. Cripple Creek Heritage Center 2.
