Butte Theater 2017 Season Full of Music, Laughter and Melodrama Since the town’s early days as a small mining camp, theater has always been a part of the rich heritage of Cripple Creek. The “Butte Concert and Beer Hall” premiered in 1896, when proprietors Halbekann and Hertz featured nightly entertainment, including a Ladies’ Vienna Orchestra. Today the Thin Air Theatre Company, a veteran group of top actors from across the country, produces professional theater at the Butte Theater year-round. June 2-July 28 – A Cripple Creek Ragtime Revue - (Musical Revue) She’s the preacher’s daughter and he’s a ragtime guy. But with luck on their side, these star-crossed lovers will find a way to make beautiful music together. A rollicking revue filled with ragtime hits, gospel favorite and loads of laughs. July 23-Aug. 24 – After Dark - (Classic Melodrama & Summer Olio) Once a member of a wealthy family, George Medhurst is reduced to working odd jobs in order to provide for his young wife. But when he learns that his fortune will be restored to him – if and only if he marries his distant cousin – which path will our hero choose? This show will be followed by a hilarious summer olio. June 30-Aug. 26 – Annie Get Your Gun - (A Musical by Irving Berlin) The Tony Award winning, fictionalized version of the life of Annie Oakley, a sharp shooter who starred in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show, and her romance with sharpshooter Frank Butler. Sept. 9-Oct. 28 – The Nerd - (Contemporary Farce) If a person saves your life, an offer to do absolutely anything for them in return seems reasonable. But, what if “anything” soon makes you regret that promise? Come see the hilarious comedy, written by Larry Shue, writer of the TATC 2016 hit production ‘The Foreigner.’ Sept. 9-Oct. 28 – The Toxic Avenger - (A musical by Joe DiPietro and David Bryan) Based on the 80’s cult film, The Toxic Avenger is a charming love story and laugh-out-loud musical that has it all: an unlikely hero, his beautiful girlfriend, a corrupt New Jersey mayor and two guys who play... we;;, everyone else... If you like LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS and THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW, you’ll love this. (Rated PG-13 for mild language & over-the-top comedic violence.) Nov. 24-Dec. 30 – Angel of the Christmas Mine - (Christmas Show & Olio) In the midst of a horrible mine collapse, three miners are trapped below ground. Separated from their families above, the miners manage to find solace and hope in the face of tragedy by sharing stories of Christmas. Followed by a fun-filled Christmas Olio.
