So much rides on the back of a donkey www.visitcripplecreek.com Incredible PHOTO COURTESY OF HISTORY COLORADO visitcripplecreek.com www.visitcripplecreek.com Donkeys have long driven Cripple Creek’s prosperity. In the late 1800s, they hauled more than 22 millions ounces of gold from the mines in and around Cripple Creek and Victor. Now, they drive tourism as the stars of Donkey Derby Days, one of the biggest summer events in Southern Colorado. Mark your calendars for the 8th Annual Donkey Derby Days on June 2 and 2. As part of this two-day extravaganza, teams of human runners, each leading a donkey (or the other way around), will race down Bennett Avenue for valuable prizes. Admission is 100% free! In addition to the races, you can expect street vendors with a crazy variety of food and drink, live music all weekend long, the funniest dog show in the West, a little-kid-friendly petting zoo, a huge pancake breakfast, an epic mountain landscape, and the opportunity (in the casinos) to win enough money to buy your own donkey herd. You also can enjoy an original melodrama, produced in a classic tradition and staged by the acclaimed Thin Air Players in the historic Butte Theater.
