Welcome
west Texas TravelHost and the
Texas Forts Trail are proud to
present this “2022 Culture and
Historical Attractions Guide.”
Within these pages you will fi nd information
on the various museums, historic sites and
cultural attractions located in the Texas Forts
Trail Region.
The Texas Forts Trail Region is one of the
state’s ten Heritage Trail Regions and is comprised
of 29 counties in Central West Texas.
(Brown, Callahan, Coke, Coleman, Concho,
Eastland, Erath, Fischer, Haskell, Irion, Jack,
Jones, McCulloch, Mason, Menard, Mills,
Nolan, Palo Pinto, Runnels, San Saba, Schleicher,
Shackelford, Stephens, Stonewall,
Taylor, Throckmorton, Tom Green and Young)
The “trail” refers to a suggested driving route
through the region that is anchored by eight
frontier forts and a Spanish presidio. The
presidio was built in 1757 when Texas was
under Spanish rule and was located on what
was then the edge of civilization. The frontier
forts were established by federal troops after
Texas joined the United States. These posts
were pre- and post-Civil War and served as
the second and third line of defense on the
expanding Texas frontier in the 1800’s. As
Civilization moved westward, some forts were
enveloped by a nearby community (such as
Fort Mason and Fort Concho), and some
became part of the ranching landscape (Fort
Chadbourne and Fort Phantom Hill).
In addition to our frontier heritage,
communities within the region boast of diverse
ranching, oil, railroad and cultural backgrounds.
Information on the Native Americans
who both roamed and settled in this are can
be found in Goldthwaite, Paint Rock, Graham,
and in Abilene at Frontier, Texas! Dublin was
birthplace and childhood home to legendary
golfer Ben Hogan and is also home to Dublin
Bottling Works, the fi rst bottling plant to
produce bottled Dr Pepper. San Saba gained
international acclaim and is known as the
“pecan capital of the world.” World War II heroes
General Ira Eaker and Colonel Earl Rudder grew
up in Eden. World-Class art museums are found
in Abilene, San Angelo and Albany. In addition
to the numerous places to visit within our
region, there are a variety of cook-off s, festivals,
rodeos and annual events that further express
the culture of the region.
We hope this Guide will inspire you to invest
